The Detroit Tigers chose Morris in the fifth round of the 1976 Major League Baseball draft. In 1977, after Mark Fidrych went on the disabled list with an injury, he was called up to the major league roster for the first time.
Morris became a regular starter for the Tigers in 1979, and his 17 wins and 3 losses (with a 3.29 ERA) cemented his status as the team’s best pitcher.
Morris, along with Lance Parrish (catcher), Alan Trammell (shortstop), Lou Whitaker (second base), Kirk Gibson (outfield), and Sparky Anderson (manager), was instrumental in making the Tigers a competitive team during most of the 1980s.
Morris had a 21-8 record and a 3.27 ERA with 223 strikeouts in 1986. During that season, he pitched a full-game shutout in three straight starts from July 9-18, contributing to his career high of six shutouts.
