At the age of 12, James and a neighborhood friend, Malik, founded the rap duo Draft pick. After several performances in New York City, including Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater, where they won two weeks in a row, the ensemble earned national attention. When James was 15 years old, he was signed to Priority Records. On the label, they released one single, “Play Ruff,” which featured Memphis Bleek and Tracey Lee.
James met Cam’ron through his cousin Tobe in 1998. Soon after, he adopted Juelz Santana’s moniker and joined his hip-hop collective, The Diplomats, alongside Jim Jones and Freekey Zekey. The Trackmasters remix of “What Means the World to You” was Santana’s first collaboration with the group, followed by the tracks “Double Up” and “All the Chickens” on Cam’ron’s second studio album, S.D.E., released on September 19, 2000, through Epic Records.
Cam’ron signed with Roc-a-Fella Records in 2001, and on May 14, 2002, he released his third studio album, Come Home with Me, which featured more collaborations with Santana, including “Welcome to New York City,” “Hey Ma,” and “Oh Boy,” which earned Santana his first Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 2003 Grammy Awards.
As a result of the album’s success, Santana and the other Diplomats signed deals with Roc-a-Fella under the Diplomat Records imprint. After four mixtapes, the group released their first album, Diplomatic Immunity, on March 25, 2003, which opened at number eight on the Billboard 200 and sold 92,000 copies in its first week, earning the group R.I.A.A. Gold certification. Just months after the September 11 attacks, Santana sparked a slight controversy by referring to himself as a “young Mohammed Atta” on a leaked version of the ballad “I Love You.” Complex rated the album one of the best albums of the decade in a retrospective.
Santana released his debut album, From Me to U, on August 19, 2003, reaching number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. The mixtape Final Destination was released on June 17, 2003, and the tune “Dipset (Santana’s Town)” won a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 46th Grammy Awards.
The Diplomats cut relations with Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam. They signed to the indie label Koch Records after a feud between Cam’ron and Roc-A-Fella Records president Jay-Z. On November 23, 2004, the band released their second album, Diplomatic Immunity 2, which featured new members Hell Rell, 40 Cal., and J. R. Writer.
The lead song from Santana’s sophomore album, “Mic Check,” was released on December 23, 2004. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached number 35.
Santana revealed in April 2005 that he had returned to Def Jam and had inked a new joint-venture agreement with them. The album’s second single, “There It Goes (The Whistle Song),” was released on May 29, 2005, and became Santana’s highest charting single, peaking at number 6 on the Hot 100 and number 3 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts. A third single, “Oh Yes,” charted at number 56 on the Hot 100 and 8 on the Rap charts, while a fourth, “Clockwork,” reached number 68. Santana was featured on Chris Brown’s “Run It!” on June 30, 2005, which spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
Santana released his second album, What the Game’s Been Missing!, on November 22, 2005. The R.I.A.A. certified both the album and the single “There It Go” as Gold.
The group separated in 2007 due to rifts and disagreements between the various Dipset members. Cam’ron surrendered his contract to Def Jam in August 2008, allowing Santana to form the hip-hop collective Skull Gang and the label imprint Skull Gang Entertainment. Before their debut album, Skull Gang, was released on May 5, 2009, the group released the mixtapes Takeover on September 19, 2008, and A Tribute to Bad Santa, Starring Mike Epps with Jim Jones, on November 25, 2008.
Santana started working on his third album, Born to Lose, Built to Win, in 2008. Despite multiple singles, including Just Blaze’s “The Second Coming” in 2007, Yelawolf’s “Mixin’ Up the Medicine” in 2009, and Chris Brown’s “Back to the Crib,” the album was never published. During this time, Juelz received his third Grammy Award nomination, for Album of the Year, for his contributions to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III.
After signing with Interscope Records in April 2010, Cam’ron and Jim Jones officially ended their feud. The Diplomats reunited for numerous tracks. Santana, alongside fellow Dipset members and their significant others, appeared on the first two seasons of VH1’s reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2011 and 2012.
Santana announced the release of God Will’s, his first solo project in eight years, on December 21, 2012. It was released on January 14, 2013, and XXL named it the year’s 9th-best mixtape. The singles “Bodies” with Lil Reese and “Soft” with Fabolous, Rick Ross, and Meek Mill preceded it. Santana also uploaded music videos for Future’s “Nobody Knows,” Wale’s “Awesome,” and Wiz Khalifa’s “Everything Is Good,” claiming that he had recorded music videos for every song on the tape. With the release of the mixtape All We Got Is Us a month later, Santana revealed his cooperation with Queens-based garment business collective S.B.O.E. (Slow Bucks Over Everything).
Santana joined the seventh season of Love & Hip Hop: New York’s supporting cast in November 2016, recording the freestyle “Up In The Studio Gettin Blown.”
Santana, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and Freekey Zekey reunited onstage for a performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom on November 21, 2017. Dipset Forever was the group’s nationwide tour in 2018, and their third album, Diplomatic Ties, was released on November 22, 2018.
Santana returned to Love & Hip Hop: New York as the primary cast member for the ninth season in November 2018, focusing on his ongoing legal issues.
