Biography Of Michael Calce /MafiaBoy
The popular and famous blackhat hacker that turned a new leaf to a security expert popularly called Michael Calce was born in 1984 in Montreal, Canada. He was also known as MafiaBoy.
On February 7, 2000, the self-acclaimed MafiaBoy known professionally as Michael Calce targeted Yahoo! with a project he called Rivolta, which in Italian means “rebellion”. Rivolta is a denial-of-service attack in which servers are overloaded with various types of communications to the point that they stop responding to commands. At the time, Yahoo! was a multimillion web company and a leading search engine. Mafiaboy Rivolta managed to shut down Yahoo! almost an hour.
According to him, Calce’s goal was to establish dominance for himself and TNT, his cyber group, in the cyber world. Buy.com closed in response. Calce responded by including eBay, CNN, and Amazon via DDoS over the next week. Calce tried but failed to knock Dell down in this DDoS attack.
In a 2011 interview, Calce claimed that the attacks were unintentionally launched after entering known addresses into a security tool he had downloaded from a repository on the now inactive Hotline file-sharing platform developed by Hotline Communications. Calce headed to school, forgetting about the app that continued the attacks for most of the day. When he got home, Calce says he found his computer crashed and restarted, not knowing what had happened during the day. He said that when he heard the news and admitted that the companies mentioned were the ones he entered today, he “began to realize what could have happened”.
His early life
He was born in the West Island region of Montreal, Quebec. When he was five, his parents separated and he lived with his mother after she won a long battle for primary custody. Every other weekend, he stayed at his father’s apartment in Montreal itself. He felt isolated from his friends at home and worried about his parents ’separation, so his father bought him his computer when he was six years old. He immediately grabbed it: “I remember sitting and listening to its sound, murmur, and shake as he processed orders. I remember the screen flashing in front of my face. Something was dizzying in the idea of dictating everything the computer worked, everything to the smallest functions. The computer gave me, a six-year-old, a sense of control and command. ”Others in my world didn’t work that way.
MafiaBoy was first spotted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police when he began claiming on IRC newsgroups that he was responsible for the attacks. He became the prime suspect when he claimed to have downloaded Dell’s website, an attack that was not made public at the time. Information about the source of the attack was initially revealed and released to reporters by Michael Lyle, technical director of Recourse Technologies.
