As a nod to his affiliation with the School Yard Crips street gang, Blueface started rapping in January 2017 under Blueface Bleedem. After graduating from Fayetteville State University and moving back to Los Angeles, he was asked to his friend Laudiano’s recording studio to get a phone charger. When Laudiano challenged him to rap over a beat, Blueface accepted the challenge and started working on his first song, “Deadlocs,” which Laudiano produced. His first full-length project, Famous Cryp, was made available in June 2018. He published his second EP, Two Coccy, on SoundCloud and Spotify in September 2018, after the song and EP helped him gain a local following in California.

The music video for Blueface’s song “Respect My Cryppin” was published on WorldstarHipHop’s YouTube channel on October 8, 2018. Soon after, the song was shared on Twitter, where it quickly became viral. Due to the video’s success, Blueface’s songs “Thotiana” and “Next Big Thing” received more notice and gained newfound popularity.

After running a polling contest on his Instagram stories and posts to decide which high school he should visit, Pasadena High School narrowly defeated Santa Monica High School, raising his popularity. His popularity increased due to the social media challenge, which attracted more followers. Blueface released videos of himself in the studio with Canadian rappers Drake and Quavo on his Instagram feed in November 2018, shortly after signing with Cash Money Records’ West Coast subsidiary Cash Money West. Blueface gained popularity in December 2018 after an acoustic performance of his new song, “Bleed It,” featuring Einer Bankz, which was made public in January 2019. Two days later, he dropped the song and a Cole Bennett-directed music video on the Lyrical Lemonade YouTube account, which garnered over 2 million views on its first day.

His first song to chart on a Billboard chart, Blueface’s song “Thotiana,” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 26, 2019, at position 75. A music video and the song’s remix by YG were released. The following week, he and Cardi B released a remix, which was the subject of another Cole Bennett video.

The two remixes are available separately on streaming providers, but a third mix combines all three. The music video for Blueface’s track, “Stop Cappin,” which he released on May 1, has received over 5 million views on YouTube in the first four days. The ways “Stop Cappin’,” “Daddy,” and “Bussdown” were published before Blueface’s EP, Dirt Bag, which was released in August 2019. The Game, Rich the Kid, Offset, Lil Pump, and Mozzy all made guest appearances on the EP’s eight songs. While “Stop Cappin'” with The Game peaked at No. 15 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, his single “Daddy” featuring Rich the Kid from the EP peaked at No. 78 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the Billboard 200, the EP peaked at position 48. Despite its economic success, the EP garnered a vast majority of unfavorable critical reviews. Hip-Hop DX’s Riley Wallace gave the project a rating of 3/5, while listeners gave it a rating of 2.33/5. Critics gave Album of the Year a 60/100 rating, while listeners gave it a 51/100 rating. Blueface launched Blue’s Fish and Soul, a soul food establishment, in 2021.
