Loofy and JW Mijo, two of his buddies, and came together to establish The Backpackerz, a rap group. They split up sometime in 2009. However, they had planned to produce a mixtape called World Playground.
Kgositsile contacted Tyler, the Creator in 2009 to let him know he was a fan of his music, and Tyler, the Creator, later found Kgositsile through Tyler’s MySpace account. Later, Kgositsile adopted the alias Earl Sweatshirt and eventually became a member of Tyler’s rap crew Odd Future. On March 31, 2010, he independently released his first mixtape, Earl, for free digital download on the Odd Future website. Tyler, the Creator, produced the majority of the mixtape. Complex ranked Earl as the 24th-best album of 2010.
Despite enthusiastic responses from both reviewers and fans, a number of sites claimed that Kgositsile had stopped recording with Odd Future. Though Kgositsile later claimed in an interview that his mother sent him to Samoa as a result of getting into trouble with friends, posts from Tyler, the Creator’s Twitter and Formspring accounts appeared to indicate that Kgositsile’s mother would not permit to release any of her son’s music. Outside of Apia, the capital of Samoa, Kgositsile attended Coral Reef Academy, a therapeutic retreat school for boys who are at risk. Kgositsile worked hard at Coral Reef Academy to regain his rights and the chance to go home. He was not allowed to use the restroom unattended when he first enrolled.
While there, he read counterculture fiction by Richard Faria and the biography of Malcolm X by Manning Marable. A post on Odd Future’s Tumblr inspired the “Free Earl” movement, born out of Kgositsile’s musical hiatus. At the group’s performances, the phrase would be chanted and featured in various songs by the collective and its individual members, sparking media attention to the cause.
Kgositsile made a comeback on November 18, 2021, with a music video for a brand-new tune called “2010,” his first single to get a commercial release since his 2019 EP Feet of Clay. Biography and Personal Life of Earl Sweatshirt
Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, popularly known as “Earl Sweatshirt” was born on February 24, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. Kgositsile’s mother is a noted academic, critical race theorist, and UCLA School of Law professor, Cheryl Harris. His father, Keorapetse Kgositsile, was a South African poet and political activist who died on January 3, 2018, at 79. Keorapetse was often mentioned in Kgositsile’s music and was called a “complicated figure” by Pitchfork due to being presented as a person that was often absent in his life due to Keorapetse living in South Africa.
At the same time, Kgositsile resided in Los Angeles, California. Speaking on his relationship with Keorapetse, Kgositsile said, “Me and my dad had a relationship that’s not uncommon for people to have with their fathers, which is a non-perfect one; talking to him is symbolic and non-symbolic, but its closure for my childhood. Not getting to have that moment left me to figure out a lot with my damn self.” Kgositsile currently lives in the neighborhood of Mid-City in Los Angeles, California. He lived in Samoa for over a year after his mother found out about his early music, most notably his debut mixtape Earl and his drug habits, sending him to Coral Reef Academy, a reform boarding school. The time in Samoa led to Kgositsile getting sober, though.
Eventually, he relapsed upon returning to the United States and caught pneumonia while on tour. Kgositsile attributes his time with his collective Odd Future, who were similar ages to him, and leaving a long-term relationship to his drug abuse, saying he was often smoking marijuana and drinking lean before quitting as he reached adulthood. Kgositsile was raised as a Nichiren Buddhist and, after a period away from the belief system, stated in 2016 that he had returned to the religion. In July 2021, Kgositsile revealed on Twitter that he has a son. His net worth is estimated to be $4 million as of the 2024 update.
