In the early to mid-2000s, Loaded Lux was featured on multiple SMACK DVDs, where he challenged other up-and-coming MCs such as Charlie Clips, Midwest/Young Miles, and Murda Mook.

Lux had already established a reputation for being lyrically inclined and combative in his approach to creating and delivering his stuff at this early stage in his career. During battles, he would frequently wear a light grey sweatshirt (as seen in his battle against Young Miles).

During the same period as his appearances on SMACK DVDs, he also competed on 106 & Park’s Freestyle Friday, where he went undefeated for 7 weeks and was later honored into their Hall of Fame in 2007. Lux is well known for defeating a choking Nuborn in Freestyle Friday’s sixth week.

Loaded Lux launched Lionz Den, a fighting league that included classic “barbershop” and “small room” styled encounters, and brought several legendary faces to the mainstream video recorded battle circuit, including Arsonal, Goodz, Tay Roc, K-Shine, and others, in the late 2000s. While all of these MCs had been fighting before to Lionz Den, it was this platform, as well as Lux’s curating, that brought them all together to contest. As a result, many credit Loaded Lux with shaping the battle rap scene by introducing these prominent MCs to audiences all over the world through these early battles.

In an interview with the RapMatic Podcast, Loaded Lux explained his motivation for founding Lionz Den:

“You have to comprehend when I do the Lionz Den for the first time. The Lionz Den is inspired by the game’s environment. I’m taking a broad look at our sector and trying to come up with new topics to discuss.

What’s lacking, what’s not being done to entice more individuals to participate? And I was just thinking about different platforms and circuits that were popular at the time, and who they were putting in positions to say, “These are the faces of Battle Rap.” “These are the individuals that represent this culture,” I say, “but I’m a grit man.” Know what I mean? I’m here. “I’m on set, and this isn’t it.

Loaded Lux had a six-year vacation from the Battle Rap stage after appearing on Freestyle Friday in 2006, and did not return until 2012. During this time, Loaded Lux took a break from organizing new Lionz Den battle league battles, and the league has been on hiatus since then, though Lux has attempted to restart it on various occasions, once declaring that his duel with Hollow Da Don would take place at a Lionz Den-organized event.

Lux, on the other hand, collaborated with Arsonal to perform under his combat league during the UW: High Stakes event. In 2012, Loaded Lux made his comeback to the battle rap scene versus Calicoe at URL’s Summer Madness 2, delivering a famous performance from which many of his phrases are still quoted today.

Outside of the battle rap community, the battle helped him gain popular fame as an incredibly talented MC, showman, and overall entertainer. This encounter inspired his current catchphrase, “You Gon’ Get This Work,” which has been mentioned by Jay-Z and a slew of other rap contemporaries in both the commercial and battle rap scenes.

Lux stunned the crowd during the battle by employing a new method that many battle rappers have since been influenced by and replicated in their stage performances. Loaded Lux set the tone for the conflict by having numerous actors march out to the stage with flowers, a funeral procession, and pallbearers bearing a genuine casket. This was supposed to be a quick show to entice the crowd and convey a message to his opponent that this would be Calicoe’s final fight.

While many in the audience found it unnerving at first, and it was initially perceived as detracting from the show’s intended spectacle, many of the other battle rappers and artists in attendance recognized the allure of this type of showmanship.

Despite having trouble remembering his verse and coughing during his first round, he was able to pick up where he left off at the start of his second round of the battle against Calicoe and produce a unanimously respected second and third round to finish the battle. Lux would eventually record a separate production in which he spoke his intended second stanza, which he uploaded to Youtube shortly after the duel was broadcast.

Due to the presence of various mainstream rappers, producers, and performers at URL’s Summer Madness 2 in 2012, this duel with Calicoe is thought to have shifted the general view and creative direction of Battle Rap for many years to come. Many Battle Rappers consider this event to be a watershed moment in their understanding of how battles should be performed, as Loaded Lux had embraced it.
