Gregory Edward Jacobs was born in New York City on August 25, 1963. His family moved across the East Coast for most of his boyhood, eventually settling in Tampa, Florida. He dropped out of Chamberlain High School less than two years later to join the Master Blasters, a mobile DJ group that had three DJs and four emcees at its peak. They played at parties and for the people at Riverfront Park’s outdoor Sunday gatherings, catching the attention of Tony Stone, a program director at WTMP radio, the city’s main R&B station. Tony offered Jacobs, who was sixteen at the time, a position as a DJ on the air, and for a brief period, he was the youngest radio personality in central Florida with a regular time slot, as “Gregory Racker.

Jacobs spent a few years traveling across the United States, drifting through odd jobs and petty criminal escapades after being fired for playing the fifteen-minute-long album version of Funkadelic’s “(Not Just) Knee Deep” in a five-minute time slot, and after tensions with his father increased. During this trip, his focus shifted from DJing to keyboard playing, and he trained himself to play the piano by practicing in piano practice rooms at music stores and colleges across the country.

He went home, swiftly acquired a diploma, and enrolled at Hillsborough Community College to study music theory with Jim Burge and piano with Patricia J. Trice.
