Haslem attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, between 1998 and 2002 on an athletic scholarship, where he played for coach Billy Donovan’s Gators teams while studying leisure service management.

For four years, he was the starting center for the Gators and was a part of the legendary 1998 recruiting class that included future Miami Heat teammate Mike Miller and helped propel the Florida Gators to national prominence under Donovan’s leadership.

Haslem inked a contract with his hometown Miami Heat on August 6, 2003. He helped the Heat get to the Eastern Conference semis as a rookie and even participated in the Rookie Challenge at All-Star weekend.
