On October 13, Shaw netted his first goal as a member of the Canadiens. Shaw caused more controversy when, late in the game, he slew-footed Buffalo Sabres forward Johan Larsson.

The event took place in the late stages of the game, with the Canadiens leading the Sabres 4-1. After consulting with the Player Safety Department, Shaw has given a match penalty but no further punishment.

Shaw checked Dallas Stars defenseman Greg Pateryn on March 13, 2018. However, he was injured in the process. He knocked himself out and hurt his knee. So, Shaw had knee surgery and would be out for about half a year as he healed.

Shaw did not attend training camp with the Canadiens, but he did play in games for the team during the 2018-2019 season. On December 31 against the New York Islanders, Shaw was injured in the neck, forcing him to miss the next 15 contests.

On February 9, 2019, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was back on the Montreal bench. Shaw got his first hat trick on February 26, 2019, in an 8-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

On November 30 against the Colorado Avalanche, Shaw was injured and later placed on injured reserve due to a concussion. After 26 games, the team confirmed on February 29, 2020, that he would not return due to the injury.

Shaw decided on July 14 not to resume the rest of the season (which had been postponed because of the COVID-19 outbreak) so that he could focus on recovering from his concussion.

Shaw had another concussion during a game against the Dallas Stars on February 9, 2021. After several concussions and recommendations from team physicians, Shaw announced his retirement on April 26.
