Over eight weeks, the boot camp-style series followed young aspiring rappers as they competed against one another. Latto won the competition overall, going by the stage name “Miss Mulatto” at the time. Dupri offered her a recording contract with So So Def Records. Still, she turned it down, stating that the money was insufficient, and instead chose to be an independent musician.

In February 2016, Stephens released her first single, “No More Talking.” On the 2016 track “Tough on the Internet,” she worked with Lil Niqo, a fellow participant from The Rap Game. She also won the 2016 Georgia Music Awards’ Youth Hip Hop/R&B Award. Miss Mulatto, her debut mixtape, was released on October 2, 2016.

Latto Let’ Em Know, Stephens’ second mixtape, was released in April 2017. Molly Brazy, Lil Key, Crucial, and Silentó were among the musicians featured on the tape. Young Lyric, a fellow participant from The Rap Game, is the target of the single “Response Diss.

The two’s continued conflict resulted in diss tracks from both parties, which included comments regarding drug usage, homosexuality, and past concert experiences. 2 Chainz, Future, Janelle Monáe, and Jacob Latimore are among Stephens’ collaborators. Stephens finished the year with an EP called Time and Pressure.

Stephens changed her stage name to Mulatto in 2018 and released a self-titled mixtape with the same name the following year.

Latto released the song “Bitch from da Souf” in January 2019. Latto was invited to perform at Rolling Loud, an annual hip hop festival in Miami, Florida, in May 2019.

Big Latto, her second extended play, was released in June 2019, and it was preceded by “Bitch from da Souf.” The song became her breakthrough hit, debuting at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 list and was certified gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The song was later remixed by rappers Saweetie and Trina, and was included on Mulatto’s third extended play (EP), Hit the Latto, released on December 12.

It was officially revealed in March 2020 that Latto had signed with RCA Records. Latto released the promotional single “No Hook” on April 23.

Starting with 2009’s The State vs. Radric Davis, Latto reproduced some rapper Gucci Mane’s album covers in July 2020, to which Gucci responded favorably. Latto then announced the release of her single “Muwop,” which she co-wrote with Gucci Mane and dropped on July 30. Gucci’s 2007 hit “Freaky Gurl” is sampled in the song. The album reached number 44 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Latto, along with Doja Cat and City Girls, was included in the remix of Chloe x Halle’s “Do It” on September 4. Latto was also featured on G-track Eazy’s “Down” the same day. The music videos for Queen of da Souf’s third and fourth songs, “On God” and “In n Out,” which feature City Girls, were released in September and October 2020, respectively. She was nominated for Best New Hip Hop Artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2020, where she was also a performer, on September 29. Mulatto released an expanded edition of Queen of da Souf on December 11 that included five new songs and spawned the single “Sex Lies,” which featured American rapper Lil Baby.

“Big Energy,” the lead song from Latto’s upcoming second studio album, was released on September 24. The song was Latto’s highest-charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number three.
