Hanley stated that although he composed his first poem when he was 16, he did not take music seriously until he was 21. He started using music to express himself. He started working with Carson-based independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2006, recording at their studio House of Pain and collaborating with its artists. Hanley collaborated with Jay Rock and Ab-Soul, who would later become fellow Black Hippys, for the first time in TDE’s studio.

Hanley subsequently signed a recording deal with TDE as a result of this. Hanley’s debut mixtape, Schoolboy Turned Hustla, was released on July 29, 2008, by G.E.D. Inc., the same label that helped fellow West Coast rapper Tyga establish his career and with whom Schoolboy Q collaborated early in his career. He acquired a contract with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2009 following the release of Schoolboy Turned Hustla, where he eventually founded Black Hippy alongside labelmates and frequent collaborators Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. Hanley and fellow West Coast rapper 40 Glocc engaged in a brief feud in 2009. Hanley questioned 40 Glocc’s gang-banging in his diss song “Ezell (40 Glocc Killa),” which was released.

According to Hanley, he made some bogus remarks about my boy, Tyga, my little brother, who subsequently explained in a video interview why they were “beefing.” I didn’t appreciate the false crap he did with Wayne, the lies, the rumors, and the immature shit he said, and I felt disrespected by this guy talking all this shit, so I just had to air it out. “It’s over; I did what I did, I said what I said, and I won’t diss him anymore because it’s evident he ain’t on my level…so why to classify myself as a loser?” he continued. On May 14, 2009, Hanley dropped Gangsta & Soul, his second mixtape, which featured the aforementioned diss tune. His first official project with Top Dawg Entertainment, which co-presented the mixtape with G.E.D. Inc., was the mixtape.

Schoolboy Q revealed on social media on December 18 that he would be releasing an album in 2017. Schoolboy Q visited Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio broadcast in February 2017 and mentioned that his new album was almost finished.

He claimed that he had developed significantly since beginning his rap career, and his upcoming album will demonstrate this: “It’s more about my life now that I’ve reached Schoolboy Q,” I said. I gave you me, but I never shared the other part of me with you: the father, the truly happy guy, the guy who isn’t simply hanging out in the hood. The guy who is currently attempting to position his friends. I’m no longer a slacker father. During the recording of his fifth studio album, Schoolboy Q stated on social media in June 2017 that he had written: “like 50 songs.” The album was “90-95 percent done,” label president Top Dawg stated on Twitter on July 31, 2018.
